This is the dumbest damn thing I’ve ever heard of.

Apparently someone lost a toe during the competition this year. Stupid is as stupid does I guess.

Mode Master: the guitar modes and scales computer

May 30th, 2008

I found this tool today and it looks really good for learning modes and scales. From the site:

If you’re studying guitar modes and scales I think you will
get a kick out of this little tool.

Here’s how it works. Indicate the key and mode in the drop down box and you will see the relative notes appear on the guitar neck in the key you requested.

So try it out and see what you think. I think this tool will finally help me understand what I’m doing with the pentatonic scale as opposed to the mode scales.

FretQuiz Will Help You Learn the Neck

April 10th, 2008

FretQuizA few weeks ago I came across FretQuiz from Guitar Lifestyle, a tool that helps you to learn the notes on the guitar. It’s a very simple quiz program that tests you on the different notes on the neck. After using the program for a bit it really has helped me to learn the notes better, and more importantly, recall them faster.

I’m at a level with my playing that I know the notes of each string and a few places where those are around the neck. But I still have trouble picking out notes on the 2nd through 5th strings, especially the sharps and flats in a higher register. Doing the quiz has helped there, but I still need some more practice for instance recall.

My favorite feature in FretQuiz is the Show Answer feature that allows you to cheat :) The cool part about that feature is that it shows you the right note and then all of the other places on the neck that note exists. If you study those charts you can begin to see patterns emerge. If you memorize the patterns then it’s much easier to know what notes are where.

FretQuiz is a pretty basic app and there are some areas for improvement, but I think the overall concept is good. Sure you could figure all of this out yourself, but if you are like me, a quiz tool like this can help motivate you to actually do it.

I think that FretQuiz could improve in 2 ways that would make it a better package. 1) The graphics for the guitar could be better - they aren’t terrible, but they are a little clunky. 2) The interface needs to be laid out better. I couldn’t view the entire screen on my laptop when the graphic of the body of the guitar was shown. I think a side by side layout of the notes form and the guitar image would improve the interface. Those are really the only two things that bothered me.

If you are interested in giving FretQuiz a try, there is a trial version offered at the site. Try it out and see if you like it.

New Free Ebook Resources

March 23rd, 2008

There are now free guitar lesson ebooks available in the resources section.  These ebooks cover quite a few things and would be great learning companions to the You Tube videos on the site.  Using these kind of resources along with books and CDs is basically how I learned the guitar so I know it works.  Enjoy.

Guitar Blog: 5 Basic Speed Exercises For Lead Guitar

March 19th, 2008

Check out this great guitar lesson post on finger speed for lead guitar.  I also learned (still learning) the guitar later in life.  I picked it up when I was about 18 and didn’t really get into it until my late 20’s and have had the same hand stiffness problems.  Practice more, stretch, and lots of alieve is what saves the day :)

Guitar5Day.com - Guitar Lesson Blog

March 19th, 2008

I visited guitar5day.com today and liked what I saw lots of guitar lessons and techniques on the blog and main site. Definitely worth checking out if you are learning the guitar. The site promises: “You now will be able to improve your guitar playing with our Rapid learing Guitar lessons. For four years I have been a leader in guitar speed learning. Over 13,165 customers have seen rapid improvement. Now you can learn on your schedule. Short yet powerful lessons and exercises teach and re-inforce the critical building blocks to succcessful and enjoyable guitar playing. ”

3 DVDs are available from the site. The video on the homepage is a bit strange with his daughter talking though the whole thing, but it’s cute I guess.

I especially like the Guitar Solo Octaves post. Nice work.

Shred Like Slash with New Series of Gibson and Epiphone Guitars

March 13th, 2008

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Feb. 11 /PRNewswire/ — Gibson Guitar, the world’s premier musical instrument manufacturer and leader in music technology announces the first ever availability of a series of “Slash” signature Gibson and Epiphone Les Paul Standard electric guitars. On Tuesday April 1st 2008 three very limited and unique models of the Slash signature Les Paul guitar will be released simultaneously around the world. Each guitar model has been designed and produced in close co-operation with the legendary Velvet Revolver guitarist, Slash. For the first time ever, the Slash models will be available from Gibson Custom, Gibson USA and Epiphone offering consumers a once-in-a-lifetime chance to own a guitar inspired by Slash. On April 1, 2008 at 5pm US EDT select dealers will offer a limited number of these models for sale. Once they are sold out, they will not be reproduced.

Gibson Custom will release their Slash Inspired by VOS (Vintage Original Spec) guitar, Gibson USA will release their Slash Signature Les Paul Standard model and there will also be an Epiphone Slash Les Paul Standard Plus packaged with exclusive Slash inspired accessories. All three new guitar models will combine individual design features while Slash’s own personal touches create a unique instrument destined to become another instant classic.

For twenty years, the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll has been embodied by one man. When he shot to fame with Guns N’ Roses in 1987, Slash was the cool cat in the top hat, cranking out timeless riffs like “Welcome to the Jungle” and “Sweet Child O’ Mine.” And, at the same time setting the standard by which all future guitar heroes would be measured. Now fast-forward to 2008 and he’s doing exactly the same with “Velvet Revolver.”

Press can download hi-res images as they become available of each model to be offered at http://www.gibson.com/press.

“Slash embodies the true essence and spirit of rock n’ roll. He is a master of his craft and respected the world over. Gibson is proud to partner with one of the worlds greatest guitar players. His signature range of guitars is symbolic and a true testament to his status and global recognition” said Henry Juszkiewicz, Chairman and CEO of Gibson Guitar. “I expect these limited edition run of guitars to sell out soon after they arrive in stores globally on 1st April 2008.”

“I have always been a Les Paul player and am very proud to have my own range produced by Gibson and Epiphone, the maker of the world’s greatest guitars. I hope that musicians around the world enjoy them as much as I do,” said Slash.
